How to determine Stepper motor size?

Hi, I’m still investigating what I need to build my first CNC machine.

Being new to this, I’m thinking of starting with something small  to mediumto learn with then maybe build anotgher larger one after that.

I want to use the machine for Both Plasma and Routing (wood & Aluminium) I brought a cheap 4 Axiz driver baord with 4 x 4a9x chips that can do up to 2amp steppers with 5mm shafts.

I guess that limits me to fairly small(ish) motors and was wondering if steppers of this size would be suitable for anything other than a small 3d printer?

Problem is that i don’t know how powerful the steppers need to be to do what I want.

when I build the later Plasma /Router I would like to re-use the same motors.

Hi Sam. We have several articles that can help you to figure out what size stepper you need for your project:

Step and Servo Motor Sizing Software for CNC

Ultimate Benchtop CNC Mini Mill Part 4: Motion Performance

Ultimate Benchtop CNC Mini Mill Part 5: Acceleration and Cutting Forces

Ultimate Benchtop CNC Mini Mill Part 6: Motor Selection Wrap-Up

The first is our quick and dirty sizing calculator. The last 3 links are a more in-depth look, which I recommend you go through to understand all the issues.
