How to optimize weight-adjusted profiles?



I have an A2Z mini-mill, with an 0.8KW motor. Previously, I used the weight-adjusted profile for the Sherline mill I had and it worked well, while limiting to 0.01 KW. However, given that I now have a much more rigid mill, I am wondering if there is a way to better reflect performance on the setup profile?

I noticed the Shapeoko3 profile doesn’t have any compensation for the spindle power, which surprised me as from what I read on the blog was that weight-adjusted power-settings were important for small, non-rigid machines.

Does anyone have an idea as to how to experiment with power settings to better reflect the potential of more rigid mini-mills?

Lukas, some thoughts:

I don’t make the weight adjusted profiles default on any machines, even the lightweight ones.  Using them is a matter of taste.  Some really like them and some prefer to just ignore weight adjustment and live with the excessive deflection of the machine.  It will result in inaccuracy in the parts and lower tool life, but they often compensate for that in other ways.

Treat the weight adjusted profile as a starting point–perhaps an ideal.  The non-adjusted profile is the other end of the spectrum.  Now you have two spindle power points.  There will be an ideal for roughing that is closer to the non-adjusted profile.  When roughing, the deflection will be less of a factor.  The ideal for finishing will be closer to the the adjusted profile.

It can be useful experiment in that way, moving the two points towards the center until you find values that are most useful to your style of work.  You might even create 2 machine profiles–one for roughing work and one for finish work.  Switch them depending on what you’re doing.
