New Diamond + Bucky Tube Nano Coating Promises Infinite Tool Life

Apr 1, 2017   //   by Bob Warfield   //   Blog, Cool  //  5 Comments

Researchers at the Institute for Fifth Generation Manufacturing are reporting that a novel tool coating has increased tool life to near infinity.  The coating uses a heretofore-unknown carbon state that has properties of both diamond and Bucky Tubes.

Recall that Bucky Tubes (also referred to as Fullerene) have the following properties according to Wikipedia:

A fullerene is a molecule of carbon in the form of a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, tube, and many other shapes. Spherical fullerenes, also referred to as Buckminsterfullerenes (buckyballs), resemble the balls used in football (soccer). Cylindrical fullerenes are also called carbon nanotubes (buckytubes).

The coating is quite colorful because the dielectric properties of the special carbon state literally teases light into it’s component rainbow colors.

The secret to the extreme tool life this coating delivers is in three parts.  First, it is extraordinarily hard, like diamond. That hardness resists dulling.  Second, the coating exhibits properties of a near-room temperature semiconductor when it comes to conducting any heat away from the cutting edge where it can be disipated by the much larger surface area of the rest of the cutter.  This coating loves to be bathed in coolant, for that reason.

The last secret remains to be completely understood.  The unusually long tool life properties appear strongests on different calendar days of the year.  There is a distinct cycle or rhythm.  Scientists are unsure what the cause of this phenomenon might be, as it is completely unique in the field of materials science.  Doctor Bernhard Von Penn, the head of the research team that developed the coating, remarks that the peak strength is always in April, and on the first day.  The team feels it will not make sense to market the new coating until this peculiar behavior can be better understood.  Once it has been decoded, it is expected that the coating will take the manufacturing world by storm.

This is not the first time the Institute has radically innovated Manufacturing.  We’ve written about their unique Atomic CNC Printing Process in another article.

  • Happy April 1st. Bob, enjoyed the read. Every one needs a giggle!

  • I hate you. I got this in my email today 4-5-17, so it took me a while to notice that this article was written on April 1st. However, I must give you props and kudos for the nod to April 1st towards the end of the article. By that point I was already imagining what it would be like to send knives off for this nigh-on magical coating… you got me.

  • Haha. Good one. You could have also used a title like “California man finds a coating with infinite cutter life. Tool manufacturers hate him”

  • Burn Hard by the Pen…yup, got me.

  • Ha ha ha you made a foolerene of me, well done, another entertaining article.
