Symmetry tolerance on a drawing…
It’s very common for designers to create symmetrical parts, and the Symmetry control can be helpful for that. But, it’s also very difficult to measure compared to most other symbols, so you’ll want to understand that alternatives. The article gives great help with that.
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances is a methodical and scientific way to specify tolerances on your drawings. It tells in a concise symbolic way how much your parts can deviate from the geometric ideal. If you do much CNC work, you’re bound to come across a drawing with GD&T symbols on it sooner or later. The good news is they’re not hard to understand and we’ve put together a quick mini-course to help you get up to speed.
One of the things I find about GD&T, is that if you’re a visual/spacial thinker, it makes more sense because the symbols have what’s called a “Tolerance Zone” that is an easy visual image to conjure up. I find that very comforting.
We recently ran a CNC Skills Inventory survey and found that 55% fo survey respondents use GD&T. That means it’s an important piece of knowledge for CNC’ers that you wouldn’t want to be without. Go ahead and try the free course. It’s short and you’ll learn a lot quickly. I recommend just going through it a chapter a day or so. There’s also a quick reference guide to the symbols that’ll give you a quick idea of what’s going on and what’s possible.
