GCode is Complicated
G-Wizard Makes it Easy

Sometimes You Get the Bull, Sometimes You Get the Horns

NarwhalApologies to all G-Wizard Trialers who mistakenly were told their trial had ended.  In fact, it is impossible for anyone’s trial to end before the end of this month since we reset all the trials so folks could try again.  Unfortunately, best laid plans and all that.

Here’s what happened:

We use an email provider called “Mailchimp.”  I’m not going to link to them right now because I’m annoyed about all this, but they’ve been pretty good to date.  They actually do a lot of things on your behalf (you the email recipients) to prevent spam.

For example, if you unsubscribe from our emails, your name disappears entirely from the database, which they maintain.  There is no way CNCCookbook can send you an email if you unsubscribe, nor is there anyway unless you have “opt-ed” in to receive the emails or one of our free trials.  You have more control than CNCCookbook does, in other words, and we think that’s a good thing.  Why would we want to send email to someone who doesn’t want the email, after all?

In this case, I was trying to do a pretty simple thing.  I wanted to add an email after the Free Trials end that gets you the purchasing link for the software.  Someone had mentioned it can be hard to find (it’s on the Plans and Pricing page for each product), so it seemed a good idea to add such an email.  Now this story will be way too long (it probably already is) if I give all the details, but suffice to say Mailchimp changed how their email automation works.  I have the old style in place, but to add an email, I had to try the new style.  And it looks a lot different.  So different, that a simple thing like sending someone on a list an email 31 days after they signed up, but not sending that email to people older than maybe 40 days ago is really really hard.  DOH!  Face palm, and another DOH!

I thought I had it, but it went out to several hundred people who had only just signed up for a trial.  That was yesterday.  I sent them an apology and reassured them that G-Wizard knows when the trials are up even if our darned email software does not.  I contacted Mailchimp customer service for a solution and they responded that I shouldn’t have checked one of the options.  OK, fine, let’s try again, this time without that option checked.  I carefully reviewed everything.  I even searched for a way to tell when the first emails would go out and to whom so I could double check that.  Alas, that feature was not apparent.  So I turned it on.  It said there were 0 emails to send.  Cautious sigh of relief, get back to work on other things.

Next thing I know, I have 2 emails from unhappy customers who were once again being told their 3 day old trial was ending.  I don’t blame them being unhappy, but as you can imagine I was really steaming at Mailchimp now.  So, I contacted their Customer Service and sent an email to their CEO and “Chief Customer Officer.”  We’ll see what they have to say about it.  My fingers are crossed.  I really need to be able to tell folks how to buy G-Wizard when the trial is done.

Postscript:  Mailchimp made this right.  They came in, helped me create a workaround, checked my work to be sure it would be okay, and got things back on track.  They even credited me some free service for the trouble.  I’m back to being happy with them again.  Thanks guys!
