Have you spent much time on a surface grinder? Do you ever need to hold a couple of tenths or less on a part? Would you like to make super-precision tooling?
This kind of work is a little off the beaten path for many machinists. It’s the realm of Tool Making and Toolmakers, and it’s fascinating stuff. You may not ever need to work to this kind of precision, or you might find just what you’ve been missing to get the job done. A lot of this involves touch and technique, which is hard to get from a book or an article. I live teacher is best, but when one isn’t available, videos can be very valuable for learning.
Suburban Tool has a great line of videos out by owner Don Bailey that are filled with practical tips on how to do various things in the shop. Suburban is famous for high quality precision tooling, so the man knows just what he is doing.
Here are a few of the videos that make a great starting point:
How to Square a Part Within 0.0001 With a Surface Grinder
Some great tips on how to shim the part so you can square it on a surface grinder to within 0.0001″…
How to Grind Fast and Accurate
A chalk talk that’s all about what happens to the wheel when surface grinding. Some good insights on how to think about grinding…
There’s a Lot More…
There’s a lot more great videos on the Suburban YouTube channel. Lots of great topics ranging from more grinding to metrology topics to discussions of what makes for quality tooling.
